Bryan Singer’s fantasy adventure, Jack the Giant Slayer, climbed the box office charts this weekend with a $28 million debut. The film starring Nicholas Hoult helped boost an otherwise disappointing box office weekend. However, given the movie’s reported $200 million production budget, its opening weekend wasn’t exactly a success.
Falling way behind Jack and into second place was last week’s comeback kid, Identity Thief, which earned only $9.7 million this past weekend. However, this total was enough to help the Jason Bateman comedy become the first film of 2013 to join the $100 million, and then some, club with a total earnings of $107.4 million.
Comedy 21 & Over, written by the same guys that gave us The Hangover, only managed to bring in $9 million, which isn’t too bad considering its $13 million budget, but still nothing to write home about. The film nabbed third place in the box office.
The Last Exorcism Part II wasn’t able to scare up more than $8 million in its release weekend, earning it fourth place in the box office with a budget of $5 million. Perhaps this film’s director, Ed Gass-Donnelly, should have kept Daniel Stamm’s promise that the last exorcism was actually the. Last. Exorcism.
The Rock’s action thriller, Snitch, plummeted to fifth place this week, taking in a mere $7.7 million. As of now this film is struggling to make back its $35 million budget.
The Box Office top 5 chart is below with the total domestic gross to date in brackets.
